Samtec 2.54 mm Pitch Cable Assembly Selection Guide (Includes MMSD Equivalent Model Comparison Chart)
Samtec’s 2.54mm pitch product line is quite diverse, covering discrete cable assemblies (dual-row MMSD, single-row MMSS), board-to-board pin-to-socket tape-and-reel products, IDC flat cable systems, and connectors with protective housings, all of which fall under the Mini Mate® platform. This platform has a maximum current rating of 4.8A and a voltage rating of 275VAC/388VDC. The MMSD series consists of dual-row cable assemblies designed for wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connections. It is available in both single-ended and dual-ended configurations, featuring a polarized anti-misinsertion design with latches available in either plastic or metal.
In terms of specifications, the MMSD uses a 2.54mm dual-row pitch, with up to 25 positions per row and a total of up to 50 pins. It accommodates PVC wires ranging from 20 AWG to 30 AWG, with a rated current of 3.8 A (@95°C) when paired with 20 AWG wire. Multiple plating options are available, and the cables are color-coded for easy identification. Plastic latches (-P) are more cost-effective, while metal latches (-K) are more durable; the choice depends on the application environment.
The difference between MMSD and MMSDT lies in the cable material. MMSD uses standard PVC, suitable for general environments; MMSDT uses Teflon™ fluoropolymer (FEP), offering better temperature resistance and chemical resistance. The electrical parameters of both—including the number of terminals (up to 50 pins), pitch, and current-carrying capacity—are essentially the same, and Samtec supports customization for the same lengths and termination types for both.
Take the model code MMSD-03-20C-L-07.00-S-K as an example: MMSD is the series name; 03 indicates three pins per row (six pins total); 20 denotes 20 AWG wire gauge; C stands for colored cable; L indicates a 10 µin gold plating; 07.00 represents a 7-inch length; S stands for single-ended; and K denotes a metal latch. Using this structure as a reference, you can interpret any model number; simply adjust the number of terminals, wire gauge, length, and latch type as needed when placing an order.
Regarding compatibility, the Tiger Eye™ terminals on MMSD cable assemblies are designed to pair with the MMHD series of shielded plugs and the MMSM series of socket tape-and-reel packages; the pin numbers must match. They are not compatible with TFC or other Tiger Eye™ LITE series products, as they use different terminal systems.
Common applications include industrial control (internal connections in PLCs, variable frequency drives, and servo drives), test and measurement (internal wiring harnesses in oscilloscopes and signal generators), medical equipment (patient monitors and ultrasound diagnostic devices), and communications equipment (base stations and interconnections between switchboard cards). The 2.54 mm pitch is a classic standard, compatible with a wide range of standard PCB sockets on the market.
When selecting a model, first determine the number of rows: use MMSS for single-row (up to 25 pins) and MMSD/MMSDT for dual-row (up to 50 pins). Next, consider the environment: PVC (MMSD) is used for standard applications, while Teflon™ (MMSDT) is used for high-temperature or corrosive environments. When the current approaches the 3.8A upper limit, consider using thicker wire gauge or other 4.8A models within the Mini Mate platform. Length and termination methods can be customized based on routing space. 3D models and CAD drawings are available on the Samtec website.
